Communities Unlimited — Rural Small Business Loans
Communities Unlimited, Inc.
$1,000–$200,000
Rural South CDFI business loans
Communities Unlimited (CU) is a U.S. Treasury-certified CDFI (since 2001) and SBA-approved lender that makes direct small business loans to entrepreneurs across the rural and small-town South. Loans range from $1,000 to $200,000 and are aimed at business owners who cannot access conventional bank financing — CU explicitly does not impose a strict minimum credit score and works differently from traditional banks. Loans can fund working capital, equipment, contract fulfillment, business acquisition, and inventory. Every borrower can work with CU's Entrepreneurship Team for business-readiness coaching before and after funding. The business itself is the direct borrower and beneficiary.

CU is one of the few rural CDFIs that will lend to startups and to owners with thin or bruised credit — but they expect to see you engage with their free Entrepreneurship coaching. Treat the coaching as part of the application: borrowers who complete the readiness work get to a 'yes' far faster, because CU underwrites the business plan and cash flow, not a FICO cutoff.
Deadline & timing
No fixed deadline. Borrowers submit an initial loan inquiry online (available in English and Spanish), then work with CU's lending and Entrepreneurship teams. Phone intake: 479-443-2700.
