What the Hustler's MicroGrant application asks

The Hustler's MicroGrant application asks two written questions, alongside your contact and business details. The entry fee is $15. Entries close monthly, and you submit on the funder’s own form at hersuitespot.com. These are the questions as they appear on the form:

  1. 1

    Tell us about your business.

    Form limit: 250 characters

  2. 2

How will you use the money if awarded a grant?

    Form limit: 250 characters

What the judges look for

We draft this application

GrantCompass drafts the Hustler's MicroGrant application from your own answers. You answer four short questions about your business and we write both answers around what the judges look for, to fit the form. We use only what you tell us: nothing is invented, and anything a stronger answer needs is left as a marked blank for you to fill. The preview is free with no card. The full draft is $9, refunded in full within 7 days if it doesn’t make your application stronger. You review it and submit it yourself; GrantCompass is independent and not affiliated with HerSuiteSpot. How to answer the Hustler’s MicroGrant application questions (with examples)

The Hustler’s MicroGrant form on HerSuiteSpot’s site is one long page of contact and business details with two required writing boxes. Each stops at 250 characters, about 40 words, with a counter underneath. HerSuiteSpot says finalists are chosen “based on vision, impact, and how the funding will move their business forward,” so the first box carries vision and impact, and the second carries the money.

Two similar grants. Deja Vu Parker of WBLS created this one with HerSuiteSpot and the Yva Jourdan Foundation. HerSuiteSpot’s HerRise MicroGrant asks the same money question in 250 characters, with a different first box. The Hustle Grant is a separate $1,000 monthly grant for women-owned businesses, with no length limit.

Question 1: “Tell us about your business.”

The program page invites businesses that are “building, growing, or stabilizing.” In 250 characters, a strong answer does four things:

  1. 1

Says what you sell, to whom and where, in the first sentence.

  2. 2

Gives one number that proves it is real. Customers, months trading, orders. Pre‑revenue? Use a waitlist or a pilot.

  3. 3

Ends on where it is headed and who gains: a hire, a neighborhood, a group of customers.

  4. 4

Drops the adjectives. “Passionate” and “innovative” use up characters and prove nothing.

Made-up example for illustration (a fictional mobile car-detailing business, not a real applicant)218 of 250 characters · 38 words

“I run a low-water mobile car-detailing service in Newark, NJ, for homes and offices. In two years I’ve built 140 repeat clients. Next: two fleet contracts I’ve been offered, and my first hire, a detailer from my block.”

Why it works: a reader can picture the business, sees proof people pay for it, and ends on offered work and a local job, the vision and impact the program selects on.

Question 2: “How will you use the money if awarded a grant?”

The hint inside this box reads “Be specific about your plans if you won the grant.” Past winners quoted on HerSuiteSpot’s winner page each name one thing the $1,000 award pays for and what it changes:

Real winners’ answers
  • “…the initial payment of our worker’s compensation insurance for our 1st set of employees.”Koast Kombucha
  • “…a new teacher and a larger location will allow us to accommodate more students…”Hood Hibachi
  1. 1

Lead with what the money moves forward. The job, order or hire you can’t take on today.

  2. 2

Then the price tag. One or two purchases, $1,000 or less in total.

Made-up example for illustration (the same fictional detailing business, not a real applicant)216 of 250 characters · 38 words

“Two fleet contracts I’ve been offered need about 40 vans cleaned a month. $1,000 covers what that takes: a $720 commercial steam cleaner and a year of fleet booking software ($280). Then I can hire my first detailer.”

Why it works: it opens on paying work, $720 plus $280 is exactly the award, and it names the same contracts and hire as the first answer, so both boxes tell one story.

Make it concrete: “Equipment and marketing to help grow my business” names nothing a reader can picture. Name the item and its price.

The rest of the form: have these ready

Draft both answers in a notes app that counts characters. Text pasted past 250 is cut off, so read the end of each box before you submit.

FieldWhat to know
Logo and headshot requiredBoth are file uploads. No logo yet? Make a simple one with your business name first.
Website or social account requiredThe label reads “Business Website or Social Media Account,” so an active business page counts.
Mailing address requiredThe form says it “will only be used to send checks to recipients.” Use an address where mail reaches you.
Application fee required$15, nonrefundable, paid by card at the bottom of the same form after you tick a consent box.

The form also asks your title, phone, gender, race, business name and industry, and how you heard about the grant. Your age and revenue range are optional.
