How to Get a $10,000 Grant for Your Small Business

All 54 programs in the $5,000 to $15,000 band

Open programs first, then the 37 that are shut, each grouped by what kind of money it is. Six categories cover the whole band, and they behave completely differently: export vouchers reimburse trade costs, premises grants reimburse building work, and corporate brand grants pay cash once a year if they run at all. Effort is the catalog’s estimate of hours to prepare a competitive application.

How do you actually get a $10,000 grant?

The practical sequence has three steps and none of them is a search for the phrase you typed. Establish that you can be paid — a registered entity, an EIN, a business bank account and a legal name that matches across all of them — because a reimbursement programme will not release money to a mismatch. Then work outward geographically: your city’s economic development department, your county, then your state agency, in that order, because the smaller the applicant pool the better your odds. Only then look at national programmes.

Expect a reimbursement, not a cheque. Eleven of the 17 open programmes pay you back for a cost you have already incurred and documented, which means you need the cash first and written approval before you spend it. Starting work before an award letter arrives is the single most common way applicants in this band disqualify themselves. Note also what the phrase attracts: the Federal Trade Commission documents a standing government-grant-scam pattern in which a page promises a grant “everyone qualifies for” and then charges a processing fee. No genuine programme in this band charges a fee to release an award.

Which $10,000 grants are open right now

Three of the seventeen carry a firm date; the other fourteen are rolling or run on a session cycle. Dated first, soonest last day first.

The largest single cluster among the open seventeen is export money, and almost nobody searching for a $10,000 grant knows it exists. Six states in the catalog currently run a voucher under the federal State Trade Expansion Program: Alaska and Florida at up to $15,000, Colorado at up to $15,000 and 50% of approved costs, New York and Washington at up to $10,000, and Oregon at up to $7,500. They pay back trade-show fees, translation, compliance testing and international travel. Competition on them scores 1 or 2 out of 5, the lowest in the band, because the eligibility rule — you must be exporting or preparing to — excludes most applicants before they start.

The second cluster is premises money, and it is strictly geographic. Philadelphia’s Storefront Improvement Program now reimburses up to $20,000 for a single property and $30,000 for a corner one; SF Shines pays up to $10,000; Baltimore’s Facade Improvement Grant pays up to $5,000 on a one-to-one match; Los Angeles BusinessSource pays up to $10,000. All four are rolling, all four require written approval before work starts, and none of them appears in a national list.

The corporate collapse: 16 brand grants, none of them open

This is not seasonality. Corporate grants in this band run annual windows of a few weeks, so at any given moment most will be shut — but shut-for-now and gone are different states, and four of these sixteen are gone. Two more, Comcast RISE and the SoGal Foundation Black Founder Startup Grant, we now record as ended after finding a redirect and a 404 respectively where the application used to be. A list that prints sixteen corporate names as available $10,000 grants is describing 2023.

The government side behaves in the opposite way. Nine of the eleven open state and city programmes are rolling or session-based rather than annual, which is why the open share is so much higher: appropriations run until the money is gone, not until a date. That difference — not generosity, not application quality — is the whole reason the answer to “which $10,000 grants are open” is dominated by agencies nobody has heard of.

A $10,000 grant versus a $10,000 microloan: the honest difference

The four differences that actually change a decision are these. Repayment: a grant is kept, a loan is not, and that is the only difference most pages mention. Timing: eleven of the seventeen open grants in this band reimburse money you have already spent, so a grant frequently cannot solve a cash-flow problem the way a loan can. Purpose lock: grant money is usually tied to the activity described in the application, while loan proceeds are generally yours to allocate. Underwriting: a loan is decided on credit and cash flow, which is a knowable test you can prepare for, whereas a grant is decided against other applicants, which is not.

Two products define the realistic $10,000 loan, and both are better than their reputation. Kiva’s US microloans run $1,000 to $15,000 at 0% interest, with no fees, no collateral and no minimum credit score, funded by a crowdfunding round the borrower runs themselves; our catalog rates the application at about seven hours. The SBA Microloan Program lends up to $50,000 through nonprofit intermediary lenders and reports an average microloan of about $13,000, at roughly eighteen hours of work. Both are available on a timetable the borrower controls, which no grant in this band is. The catalog rates loan applications at a median of 15 hours, the same as grants, so effort does not separate them either.

Tax treatment is the difference people find out about last. Loan proceeds are not income, and the IRS says so in as many words in Publication 334, its tax guide for small business: an amount you receive as a loan is not income to you. Grant money paid to a for-profit business generally is income, because the tax code starts from all income from whatever source derived and the pandemic-era relief programmes that were tax-free each needed their own statutory carve-out to get there. Ten thousand dollars of grant is worth less than ten thousand dollars after tax, ten thousand dollars of 0% loan is not, and almost no page comparing the two says so.

The $10,000 band, measured

• $10,000 is a marketing figure, not a market. 51 of the 54 ceilings are $5,000, $10,000 or $15,000. Funders round; needs do not.
• The open programmes are easier and less contested than the catalog average. The 17 open ones score a median 8 out of 10 for ease and 2 out of 5 for competition, against 6 and 3 across all 342 grants in the catalog — because obscurity, not merit, is what thins the field.
• Five hours is the median application. Across the 17 open programmes the median effort estimate is 5 hours, ranging from 2 hours for the Women Founders Grant to 12 for the Florida STEP voucher.
• No federal programme appears in this band at all. Zero of the 54 are federal. Washington funds the STEP vouchers, but the money reaches a business through a state agency, which is why the row says state.

Which three are worth your time at this award size

Hand-picked after reading all 54 records and re-checking each open candidate against its funder, weighing award, effort, competition and how narrow the eligibility gate really is. Written by hand once, and deliberately excluded from the monthly recompute that regenerates the table and the statistics above it.

What we would not spend time on. Any of the sixteen corporate brand grants, until one of them posts a date: nothing is gained by preparing for a window that may never reopen, and four of the sixteen have already ended. The Denver BIO Fund is a genuinely good programme whose round closed on August 18, 2026 even though the city’s page still says otherwise, so treat it as a watch item rather than an application. And the Breva Thrive Grant is one $5,000 award a quarter against a national field — the arithmetic is closer to a raffle than a grant, and its next window does not open until October 1, 2026.

The correction log for the $10,000 band

Three status changes, two amount corrections, four programmes confirmed dead and two we could not read at all — every one of them dated, and published here rather than quietly patched into the table.

• August 24, 2026 — correctionWashington’s STEP export voucher has reopened, and our catalog said it was halted. Our record still carried “STEP voucher applications temporarily halted as of October 1, 2025.” Washington Commerce’s own page now says the programme welcomes applications, under a federal award window running June 30, 2026 to September 29, 2027, at up to $10,000 per voucher and up to three vouchers a year. This is the error direction that costs a reader money, and it is the reason this page’s open count went up as well as down.
• August 24, 2026 — correctionThe Denver BIO Fund round is closed, and both our catalog and the city’s own page said otherwise. The current round for East Colfax construction-impacted businesses had a stated deadline of Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Denver’s page still reads “applications are open” six days later, and no successor round has been posted. Our own catalog freshness sweep earlier the same day had moved this record to reopened; a direct read of the round notice resolves it the other way, and the record is now between rounds.
• August 24, 2026 — correctionPhiladelphia raised its storefront caps and we had the old numbers. Our record says up to $15,000. The Philadelphia Department of Commerce raised the Storefront Improvement Program to up to $20,000 for a single property and $30,000 for a corner or multi-address property, announced June 26, 2026. The programme has therefore outgrown this page’s $5,000 to $15,000 band; it stays listed with the new figures, because someone searching for a $10,000 storefront grant is looking for exactly this.
• August 24, 2026 — correctionColorado’s Advanced Industries Export Grant is rolling, not a fixed summer window. Our record described a cycle open July 1 to August 27, 2026. OEDIT’s own page says applications “have a rolling deadline” within an award cycle that starts in July and ends the following June, and confirms the cap at up to $15,000 and up to 50% of approved expenses.

The SoGal Foundation Black Founder Startup Grant’s iFundWomen page returns “the requested page could not be found,” and SoGal’s own site no longer lists it. The FedEx Entrepreneur Fund and Boost Camp contest has been officially retired.
• August 24, 2026 — endedSecond Service Foundation shut down, which ends two records at once. Its closure formally kills both the Military Entrepreneur Challenge and the StreetShares Foundation Veteran Small Business Award. Any page still advertising an October deadline for the StreetShares award is describing a programme with no administrator.
• August 24, 2026 — unverifiable, flaggedTwo records could not be checked and say so on the page. kcmo.gov returned 403 to every attempt to read the Kansas City Outdoor Dining Enhancement Grant, and helloalice.com returned 429 to every attempt to read the Hello Alice and Verizon Digital Ready grant. The $15,000 Kansas City cap is corroborated by local reporting but its current intake status is not confirmed. Both rows carry a visible unverified flag rather than an implied confirmation.
• August 24, 2026 — re-verifiedFour open programmes confirmed against their funders. NC IDEA MICRO at $10,000 with a fall 2026 close of 5:00pm ET on August 24; the Iowa Tourism Marketing Grant at $2,500 to $10,000 closing September 30, 2026; Global NY STEP at up to $10,000 and 50% reimbursement through September 29, 2027; and MassCEC’s internship reimbursement at $8,640 per summer intern and $4,320 per spring or fall intern.
