DOE ITAC Implementation Grant — Small Manufacturer Energy Efficiency
U.S. Department of Energy — Office of Manufacturing and Energy Supply Chains (MESC)
Up to $300,000
Turn your free DOE energy audit into cash grants
The ITAC Implementation Grant provides cash grants to small and medium-sized manufacturers (SMMs) to implement energy-saving recommendations made by DOE Industrial Training and Assessment Centers (ITACs) or Onsite Energy TAPs. Manufacturers that first receive a free ITAC energy audit can then apply for up to $300,000 per recommendation to fund projects like industrial heat pumps, onsite solar, LED lighting, compressed air upgrades, and fleet electrification. 50% cost-share required. Up to $80 million available through FY2026.

- Fewer than 500 employees at the assessed facility
- Gross annual sales less than $100 million in the most recent fiscal year
- Annual energy expenses between $100,000 and $3.5 million at the facility
- Must have received an eligible ITAC, Onsite Energy TAP, or approved third-party assessment since January 1, 2018 (or equivalent assessment since January 1, 2021)
- Project must implement a specific recommendation from a qualifying assessment report
Hard requirements
- Max 500 employees
- Maximum $100,000,000 annual revenue
- Restricted to specific NAICS codes: 31, 32, 33, 1114, 22131, 22132
- Requires a prior Phase I award
What it covers

- Onsite solar PV and battery storage
- LED lighting and controls
- Compressed air system upgrades and leak detection
- Variable frequency drives for motors and pumps
- HVAC and process heating improvements
- Fleet and industrial equipment electrification
- Building envelope improvements tied to energy efficiency
Ineligible expenses

- Administrative overhead beyond project direct costs
How to apply
-
1
Request a free ITAC assessment
Contact the nearest ITAC center (50+ university-based centers nationwide) to schedule a no-cost facility energy assessment. A team of engineering faculty and students conducts a 1-2 day site visit and delivers a confidential report within 60 days.
-
2
Identify eligible recommendations
Review the assessment report for specific project recommendations (e.g., LED upgrade, heat pump installation, compressed air system improvements). Each distinct recommendation is a separate eligible grant application.
-
3
Submit application via EnergyWerx portal
When the program is open, apply at energywerx.org/itac. Upload the assessment report, project cost estimates, and documentation that confirms the facility meets eligibility criteria. Each recommendation requires a separate application.
-
4
Quarterly review and award
Applications are reviewed on a rolling quarterly basis. Successful applicants receive a Notice of Selection followed by an award agreement. Funds are disbursed on a reimbursement basis after project implementation.
-
5
Implement project and submit for reimbursement
Complete the energy efficiency project and submit invoices, receipts, and verification documentation. DOE reimburses up to 50% of total eligible project costs.
