U.S. Department of Energy — Industrial Technologies Office (ITO) / MESC
Free service
Free expert help to cut your energy bill with onsite generation
DOE's Onsite Energy TAP program provides free, regionally delivered technical assistance to manufacturers and large energy users interested in adopting onsite electricity generation and storage — including combined heat and power (CHP), solar PV, battery storage, industrial heat pumps, waste heat to power, and geothermal. Ten regional TAPs cover all 50 states. Manufacturers that receive a TAP assessment become eligible for DOE ITAC Implementation Grants of up to $300,000 per recommendation.

How to apply
-
1
Identify your regional TAP
DOE operates 10 regional Onsite Energy TAPs covering all 50 states. Find the nearest TAP at energy.gov/cmei/ito/onsite-energy-program or email onsiteenergy@ee.doe.gov.
-
2
Initial consultation
Contact your regional TAP to describe facility size, energy use, and goals. TAP staff assess fit and schedule a preliminary virtual or phone consultation.
-
3
On-site assessment
TAP engineers conduct a site visit to evaluate your facility's energy profile, identify viable onsite generation technologies (CHP, solar, storage, heat pumps), and develop project-specific recommendations.
-
4
Receive confidential assessment report
TAP delivers a confidential report with recommended technologies, estimated costs, projected savings, and payback analysis. This report qualifies the facility for ITAC Implementation Grants.
Industry & certifications
NAICS codes: 31, 32, 33
A TAP assessment unlocks ITAC Implementation Grant eligibility — manufacturers who complete one can apply for up to $300K per recommendation to actually fund the recommended projects.
Deadline & timing
No application cycle. Manufacturers contact their regional TAP directly. Service delivery is subject to TAP capacity and scheduling.
