The NSF STRIDE Ventures AI Efficiency Challenge funds U.S.-based AI companies developing deployment-ready innovations that reduce AI energy consumption, compute costs, or infrastructure requirements. Two award tiers: up to $3.5M (large projects) and up to $1.75M (medium projects) over 24 months. Open to for-profit AI companies. Applications close July 13, 2026. Eligible expenses
- Salaries for technical and engineering staff working on the AI efficiency project
- Compute infrastructure costs for testing and validating the efficiency innovations
- Equipment and software directly related to the project
- Deployment testing and validation costs
Ineligible expenses
- Pure basic research with no deployment pathway
- General AI model training unrelated to efficiency improvements
- Marketing or sales activities

Choose between Medium ($1.75M) and Large ($3.5M) tier based on project scope. Prepare application materials: technical approach, deployment readiness evidence, team qualifications, and 24-month milestone plan.

Pitch presentation (if invited, July 30–31, 2026)
Pre-selected applicants present to an external jury on July 30–31, 2026. STRIDE Ventures and NSF make final award decisions after the pitch stage.

This is an NSF-backed prize challenge run by a private operator (STRIDE/Start2) — the go/no-go milestone gates mean funding can stop between phases. Have contingency plans for each phase.
