The single exception is the South Carolina Apprenticeship Tax Credit, which reduces a tax bill rather than paying cash. 10 have a deadline inside the next 60 days; 7 run a recurring cycle with no fixed date; 15 take applications year-round. “Open” here means the program’s status is active and its intake is rolling or dated on or after today — it does not mean money remains, because several of these are first-come and stop when the appropriation runs out.

The three bands, and why they are different decisions
Every list of microgrants prints them as one pile. They are not one pile. The work is roughly constant across the bands while the money is not, so the calculation a founder should run changes completely between them.
$1,000 and under — volume, not selection
Nine programs, all grants, and five of them recur every month or every week. Skip draws twice weekly and HerRise closes on the last day of every month; both take about half an hour. At this size the sensible strategy is not to write a better application, it is to be in more draws: the same half-hour of material can be reused across The Hustle Grant, Coach K, Business Freedom and the Awesome Foundation, whose 80-plus chapters each award separately. The two exceptions that are worth reading carefully rather than firing at: USDA OCCSP, which is not competitive at all — any certified organic operation qualifies for up to $750 back — and Colorado’s pre-approved equipment grant, which is four hours of work for at most $500 of hardware and never any cash.
$1,001 to $5,000 — the band that actually pays
Fifteen programs, all grants, and the best effort-to-award ratios on the page sit here. The Galaxy Grant and AdIQ Cares both take about 15 minutes for a $2,500 award. Shophand asks an hour, charges nothing, and pays $2,500 in cash plus $2,500 in services. Against those, Tampa’s Entrepreneur Support Hub wants ten hours, a completed technical-assistance course and a referral form you cannot submit yourself, for a maximum of $3,000 — genuinely worth it if you are a low-income Tampa microenterprise who wants the coaching too, and a poor trade if you only want the money.
$5,001 to $10,000 — where the conditions arrive
Fourteen programs, thirteen of them grants. This is the only band where the money is large enough to be worth real paperwork, and it is also where almost every condition on this page lives: seven of the eight programs that require a cash match are here, as are most of the ten reimbursements. The state export vouchers — Washington, New York, Colorado, Delaware and Oregon — all cap around $10,000 but reimburse only half of what you spend, so the real question is whether you were going to that trade show anyway. The cleanest cash award in the band is the Hey Helen Grant: $10,000, unrestricted, roughly two and a half hours, $15 to enter, and a new round every month.
Which are worth the hour
Divide the published ceiling by the published application-hours estimate and the spread across these 38 programs is enormous: from $125 an hour at the bottom to $10,000 an hour at the top, for work that is qualitatively similar. The median is about $1,000 an hour in the two smaller bands and $2,361 in the largest. That number is the value of an hour if you win, which is why it is a filter and not a forecast.
The best hours on this page are the shortest ones. The Galaxy Grant and AdIQ Cares each publish a 15-minute application against a $2,500 award — about $10,000 for the hour, and both are free to enter. Skip and HerRise come next at roughly $2,000 an hour. Then the Hey Helen Grant at $4,000 an hour for its $10,000 ceiling. None of these asks for a business plan, and that is exactly why they attract thousands of entrants.
The worst hours are not the small awards — they are the small awards with institutional paperwork. Colorado’s pre-approved equipment grant is the floor of this page at roughly $125 an hour: four hours of registration and forms for up to $500 of hardware, delivered as equipment rather than money. Tampa’s microgrant is $300 an hour and gated behind a partner referral. Baltimore’s Facade Improvement Grant is $500 an hour, and it also wants a 1:1 match and pays only after the work is finished. Nobody writing a microgrant listicle says any of this, because the arithmetic is unflattering to the listicle.
Now discount it by your odds, because the ratio does not include them. A fifteen-minute application that anyone in the country can file is competing against everyone; a four-and-a-half-hour application restricted to for-profit businesses physically inside one Virginia county is competing against a few dozen. On raw arithmetic the county grant looks like a worse hour. On expected value it is very often the better one, and the same logic makes a single credit union’s pilot grant across six Wisconsin counties more winnable than any national monthly draw. 18 of the 38 programs here are tied to a single state or city, across 14 states — and those are the ones a national list will never show you.

7 of the 38 programs on this page charge a non-refundable application fee, between $15 and $25. All 7 are private or foundation-run; no government program in this slice publishes one. 6 state explicitly that applying is free. The remaining 25 say nothing either way, which is not the same as saying it is free.
In absolute terms the fees are small. Against the award they are trivial if you win: $15 on the Hey Helen Grant’s $10,000 is 0.15%, and $25 on the Women Founders Grant’s $5,000 is half a percent. The number that matters is the other one — the fee is 100% of your cost when you do not win, and most applicants do not win. The Freed Fellowship is the clearest case: $19 to enter, a $500 monthly award, and a cycle that repeats every month, so a founder who enters all year has spent $228 chasing $500. That can still be a rational bet. It should be a knowing one.
A fee is not by itself a warning sign — Her Agenda and HerRise are long-running, well-documented programs, and several waive or halve the fee for members and subscribers. What should stop you is a fee that scales with the award, a fee paid to a third party rather than the funder, or a “grant” that asks for bank details before it has selected anyone. Cash, reimbursement, or equipment — it matters more than the number
26 of these 38 programs pay you cash when you are selected. 10 pay you back only after you have already spent the money, 1 arrives as equipment rather than cash, and 8 require you to put up matching funds of your own. A $10,000 award that reimburses half of a $20,000 trade-show trip is not a microgrant for a business that does not have $20,000.
Reimbursement is the quiet condition on the upper band. Every state export voucher here works this way, as do the facade and storefront programs: SF Shines and Portland’s repair grant both pay against receipts for completed work, and Baltimore’s FIG combines reimbursement with a 1:1 match and prior approval. MassCEC’s internship program reimburses a wage you have already paid. None of that makes them bad — they are among the most winnable programs on this page, because far fewer businesses can float the cost — but they are working-capital decisions, not free money.
Two rows are not cash at all. Colorado’s pre-approved equipment grant ships you LED fittings and aerators from a fixed catalogue. The South Carolina Apprenticeship Tax Credit is the one program here that is not a grant at all: it reduces a South Carolina income tax bill by up to $4,000 per apprentice per year, which is worth exactly nothing to a business that does not owe South Carolina income tax. It is on this page because it appears on published microgrant lists, labelled, rather than quietly counted as a grant.
The reimbursement that costs nothing extra. The exception worth knowing is USDA’s Organic Certification Cost Share, which pays back up to 75% of a certification fee you were always going to pay, up to $750 per scope, with no competition and no scoring. It was defunded in early 2025 and restored on July 4, 2025 through FY2029, which is why several lists still show it as dead. Any certified organic operation qualifies; you apply through your state agriculture department, which sets its own window.
The ones that come back — and why the calendar is the hard part
16 of the 38 programs on this page run on a repeating cycle — monthly, quarterly, twice-yearly, or in Skip’s case twice a week. Missing one is not losing an opportunity; it is waiting thirty days.
This is the structural difference between microgrants and the big state and federal programs, and it changes what a founder should actually be good at. A $500,000 manufacturing grant rewards a strong application. A $1,000 monthly microgrant rewards showing up every month with a reasonable one. The Awesome Foundation takes that furthest: 80-plus independent chapters, each awarding $1,000 a month against its own theme or city, and you may apply to more than one. NASE picks a new winner monthly from its membership. Secretsos runs quarterly and explicitly does not roll applications over — you resubmit each quarter or you are not in it.
The practical failure is not rejection, it is drift: a founder applies to three microgrants in one motivated week, wins none of them because most people win none of them, and never applies again. The programs that reward persistence are precisely the ones a person cannot hold in their head. That is what a deadline watch is for, and starring a program in the database puts it on one — free, no subscription.

- Microgrants are the one honest corner of this market. 37 of 38 are genuine grants. In the veteran slice of the same catalog only 2 of 12 open programs are; in the rural slice, 4 of 20. Small awards attract fewer lenders dressing debt up as free money.
- Half of this money is private. 20 of 38 programs are run by companies and foundations rather than government, which is the reverse of every larger band in the catalog and is why microgrants move faster and ask for less.
- Effort varies by a factor of forty, award by a factor of twenty. The applications run from 15 minutes to 10 hours; the ceilings from $500 to $10,000. The two are only loosely related, which is the entire argument for reading the effort column before the amount column.

There is no official definition. In practice the US small-business world uses it for awards up to about $10,000, which is the line this page draws: 38 open programs publish a maximum of $10,000 or less. The label matters less than the shape — microgrants tend to be privately funded, lightly documented, frequently repeated, and decided in weeks rather than the six to nine months a federal award takes. 20 of the 38 here are run by companies or foundations, which is why the cadence is what it is.

Are microgrants that charge an application fee legitimate?
Often, yes. 7 of the 38 programs here charge $15 to $25, and they include long-running, well-documented awards. The fee is how several small private programs cover platform costs, and some waive or halve it for subscribers and members. What a fee does is change the arithmetic: it is non-refundable, and for a recurring program you pay it every cycle you enter. The patterns that should actually stop you are different ones — a fee proportional to the award, a fee collected by a third party rather than the funder, or any request for bank credentials before a selection has been made. None of those appear in this slice.
What is the fastest microgrant to apply for?
By the catalog’s published estimates, the Galaxy Grant and AdIQ Cares at roughly 15 minutes each, both free to enter and both worth $2,500. Skip and HerRise take about half an hour for $1,000. Speed cuts both ways: an application anybody can finish in a quarter of an hour is one everybody finishes, so the shortest forms are also the most entered. If you have a genuine geographic or demographic angle, a longer local application is usually the better use of the same hour.
Can I apply for more than one microgrant at a time?
Yes, and at this size that is the point. Almost none of these programs restrict you from holding other awards; the restrictions that do exist are within a program — Entreprenista excludes previous winners, Iowa allows one application per entity per cycle and will not fund the same project two years running, and Outta Excuses runs one entry per quarterly period. The Awesome Foundation explicitly allows applications to multiple chapters. Where a program does have an exclusivity rule it is in its eligibility list on its own page.
Is a microgrant taxable?
For a for-profit US business, a grant is generally treated as taxable income, and funders paying $600 or more commonly issue a Form 1099.
